Insert the empty disk
Put the empty disk in the any slot of the computer.
Remove all other disks during installation, since
- you may be surprised on whih disk the ystem is installed
- the other disk may contain valuable data.
Fire it up
Insert the USB stick and power-up the system.
A menu apears on the screen: choose to install.
The computer does not respond to the keyboard,
and after 30 seconds it starts Ubuntu persistently.
Even when it is running, no keyboard.
Shut it down with the power button.
Replace the USB keyboard with a PS2 keyboard (I told you before),
and power-up again.
A menu apears on the screen: again choose to install to hard disk.
Then you get a desktop and some questions, like Language, keyboard-type, timezone....
All can be done with keyboard-only (TAB, no mouse needed).
When asked to Prepare disk space: choose for Guided - use entire disk,
iand check just below if you inserted the corect disk.
This is just temporal, so do not waste time on any better partitioning.
(Later on this disk will be added to a Raid set anyway).
After a while the computer informs you: Installation is complete.
Hit restart now.
Maybe you want to replace the PS2 keyboard with the USB keyboard at this moment,
and definitely add the (USB) mouse.
It should boot from disk now, and an Ubuntu desk-top appears onto the video screen.
Press 'Reboot' when asked for, and remove the USB stick.
Mail
When asked for, choose the mail configuration of your sever:
- Internet site: you can deliver mail to any host on the internet directly
(as if you are a provider)
- Internet smarthost: you must send your mail for the Internet
to your Internet provider
- Satellite server: you have your own mail server elsewhere.
After installation
To obtain a normal command prompt, choose Applications, Accesories, Terminal.
For all subsequent commands you should be root.
Now you can su as root from console, or login as root.
You van also login to root fom the local LAN.
You may want to to remove pts/0 later, when the system works,
to prevent hackers from taking over your system.
Reboot from disk
Now
- shutdown -h now (power off)
- Remove the USB stick,
- reboot (power on)
Be sure, you are booting from the correct disk !
If it fails: check the boot disk list Bios menu.
